Upgrade Classes

1How do I find and enroll in upgrade classes?

Upgrade classes are available through the NorCal S&C LMS Course Catalog. Once you have created an LMS account, log in and browse the catalog to view available online and in-person courses.

Select a course to review its description, requirements, and enrollment information. You can enroll directly through the catalog when registration is open.

2How do I access the Course Catalog?

You must first create an account and sign in to the NorCal S&C LMS. After logging in, select Course Catalog to view available Installer/Technician upgrade classes.

3Are in-person upgrade classes listed in the Course Catalog?

Yes. In-person upgrade classes will also be listed in the NorCal S&C LMS Course Catalog.

In-person classes must meet the required minimum number of enrolled students before class dates are scheduled. Once the minimum enrollment is met, the course listing will be updated with the scheduled class dates, times, and location.

4Do I need a password to register for upgrade classes?

No. A separate registration password is no longer required. Eligible users who have created a NorCal S&C LMS account can log in and enroll in available classes through the Course Catalog.

Some courses may have eligibility requirements or prerequisites. Review the course details before enrolling.

5How do I sign up for the VDV or Fire/Life Safety Exam prep class?

The VDV and Fire/Life Safety Exam Prep classes are offered online through the NorCal S&C LMS Course Catalog. Log in to the LMS, locate the appropriate course, and enroll through the catalog.

Before access is granted, the JATC will verify that you are in good standing with your IBEW Local. Please allow time for this verification to be completed.

6Where can I purchase the Electrical or Fire Alarm code books?

Code books may be purchased through the JATC. To request the current Book Order Form, call (510) 560-2032 or use our Contact Us form.

You may also purchase code books from an online or local vendor. Before purchasing, confirm that you are buying the current edition required for your course, certification, or exam.

Please note that certification exams now use electronic code books. Free online versions of applicable codes may be available, and creating an NFPA LiNK® account can be a cost-effective way to access current code editions electronically.

7How do I register for OSHA 10 or OSHA 30?

OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 are offered online through the NorCal S&C LMS Course Catalog. Log in to the LMS, locate the OSHA course you need, and enroll directly through the catalog.

8What does "Good Standing" mean?
A IBEW member who is in "Good Standing" is current with their membership dues.

CA State VDV and Fire/Life Safety Certifications

1Where do I sign up for the state VDV & Fire/Life safety tests?
Go to our links page to find the link to the Department of Industrial relations website. Here you will find all the information regarding the Electrical exams (NorCal S&C JATC is not affiliated with the State Certifications).
2How many hours do I need for recertifying my State Certification?
32 hours of continuing education by an approved training facility is required every three years. For further information refer to the DIR website https://www.dir.ca.gov. You can find the links on our Links Page.
3How do I get proof of my continuing education hours?

The method for obtaining proof of completion depends on the course.

For most online courses, you can download or print a certificate of completion directly from the NorCal S&C LMS after you successfully complete the course. This certificate will show your completed course and applicable continuing education hours.

For in-person courses, you may need to request a certificate from the JATC because final attendance hours can vary. To request documentation, call (510) 560-2032 or use our Contact Us form.

For OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 training, your OSHA completion certificate or card serves as proof of completion. Please note that only one OSHA course may be applied toward recertification requirements.

4I am not a NorCal Sound and Communication member but would like to take the VDV or Fire/Life Safety exam prep class. How do I sign up?
The Exam prep class is for NorCal S&C members only. However, we have agreements with some California Locals to allow their members to participate. Contact your Training Director with your Local JATC to get the information required to register. The S&C JATC confirms with your Local if you are in "Good Standing" (dues are up to date).
